Our Governing Body

The governors, in conjunction with the headteacher, are appointed as strategic leaders of the school. This includes the appointment of all members of staff, teaching and non-teaching, monitoring the school budget share and the overall responsibility for the aims, ethos and implementation of policies of the school.

The governors are there to support the learning journey of every child and to ensure safeguarding measures are in place and adhered to.

All our governors are volunteers and have been appointed as community governors, elected by parents, the local authority or by staff members.

Our governors receive relevant training on all aspects of school life and expectations to build their skills to allow them to make informed decisions and challenge the leadership team.

Our governors are supported by LCC Governor Support Service and the National Governors Association, and have access to information from GEL e-learning.

Middleton Primary School Governors 2024-25

Name Start-End Dates Position Register of interests Personal Statement
Geoff Day 15/06/2015-15/06/2027 Chair Geoff Day is a volunteer reading helper with Beanstalk and Save the Children. From June 2014 to 17 October 2022 I held the post of Chair of the Local Governing Body and considered it to be a great privilege to do so. After one year as Vice Chair I returned to being Chair. I like to think that I am “putting something back” into Society by being a School Governor. I am an old “Miggy” lad, born and bred and I attended Middleton Infants and Junior Boys, as it was then, way back in the 1950s, before leaving to go to the (old) Cockburn High School, after passing my “Eleven Plus”. You can see then why I say it’s a privilege to be Chair! The whole of my working life was spent in Social Housing, working in both Local Authority and Housing Association housing management and retiring at the end of 2012. For me, retirement hasn’t meant putting my feet up as I have continued to be very active- for example I am a Volunteer Reading Helper for “ Coram Beanstalk” - a national Charity, assisting some of our children here at Middleton Primary to improve their reading skills. I also enjoy gardening, decorating, walking, swimming, going to the theatre and holidays in Greece, as well as spending time with my (11) grandchildren.
Sarah Tissiman 06/02/2023-05/02/2027 Headteacher Sarah is Headteacher at Middleton Primary School. I have worked at Middleton Primary School for 13 years, starting out as a class teacher and now Headteacher. I feel very lucky to work in a school that is at the heart of the community. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my two dachshunds, Frank and Bruno.
Jon Hairsine 29/05/2018-27/05/2026 Governor Jon Hairsine is a director of a limited company that provides education consultancy services in the region. He has no current commercial relationship with the school or any other schools within the LA. Jon is also a governor at various other schools. I'm 62 years old (important to say that as children ask me every time I’m in school!). I live in Hebden Bridge, which is a town in the Pennines, about 20 miles away. I’m married and have two adult children, who live in Manchester and Sheffield. I worked in business for 30 years, and for 12 years pretty much full time in education, both as a volunteer and a paid consultant, helping schools to improve. Now, I just help by being a governor at a number of schools across West Yorkshire. When I get any free time, my favourite thing to do is go cycling in the wonderful Yorkshire countryside, and sometimes in other parts of the World.
Steve Jones 28/01/2021-27/01/2027 Vice Chair Steve is a volunteer reading helper with Beanstalk. I recently retired from the NHS having worked as a consultant paediatrician at Pinderfields hospital, Wakefield, for over 30 years. Over this time I developed a number of special interests including medical education, diabetes, injury prevention and safeguarding. I grew up in Hertfordshire and attended medical school in London. I have 3 grown up children and, so far, 3 grandchildren. I live with my partner in Altofts. I am getting to know Middleton Primary having started to volunteer as a Beanstalk reading helper and through that met Geoff Day, the then Chair of the Local Governing Board, who encouraged me to join the team of Governors. My motivation is to do my bit to reduce the inequality of opportunity for those growing up with fewer advantages than I had. My pension lump sum was spent on a narrow boat on which I plan to explore the canal network!
Sarah Latham 5/2/2024-5/2/2028 Governor Sarah is a volunteer at the school library. In 2022 I made the difficult decision to retire having spent 35 years teaching the children and supporting the families and wider community of Middleton Primary School. Retiring has allowed me to spend more time with my family. As literacy leader l always promoted a love of reading and now volunteer one day a week running the school library at Middleton. Now I see all the children at least once a fortnight! 10 Never very good at sitting still, I am also involved in a number of Girlguiding projects and at last have time to attend fitness classes, go walking, enjoy travelling and read more. Earlier this year I was delighted to be asked to join the governing body at Middleton Primary School.
Harry Bramhall 28/9/2023-27/9/2027 Governor   I’m Harry, a dedicated educator with nearly a decade of experience, currently teaching at a large, three-form entry school. Teaching has been my lifelong ambition, and I’m passionate about supporting children to reach their full potential. I’ve worked in a variety of settings, from a small school on an army base to a large city school, and I’m proud to be a member of the governing body for Middleton Primary having made Middleton my home since moving from Lancashire. While I’m new to this role, I’m loving the opportunity to help shape the school’s direction and create the best possible environment for students to thrive. I strongly believe in egalitarian education and that every child deserves an equal chance to succeed, starting with a strong foundation at in their formative years. Before my teaching career, I worked abroad throughout Europe, running children’s clubs and even performing as a children’s entertainer in a full monkey suit! Outside school, I love being outdoors—hiking, swimming and baking are my favourite ways to relax. On quieter days, I enjoy staying home with my cat (Dame Judi) and a Tim Burton classic.
Jane Hurst 21/10/2024-21/10/2028 Governor Jane is a teacher at Middleton Primary School.
As of September 2018 we are part of the Cockburn Multi-Academy Trust.

Historical governors: Penni Bullock (left 2023), Samantha Williams (left 2024), Kelly Gibson (left 2024)
